Maryland Senate Legalizes Gay Marriage

After debate and filibustering by some Republicans and foes of gay marriage in the Maryland state senate, the gay marriage bill legalizing gay nuptials in the state has passed 25-22. The bill faced numerous amendments in the senate dealing with religious exemptions, restricting gay teens from getting married, and amendments dealing with education all of which failed.

The Maryland house has already approved the bill by slim majority and now the bill awaits signature from the Governor who has vowed to sign the bill into law.

The law will not take effect until next year giving the opposition time to front a referendum against gay marriage and any legal challenges that maybe brought against such campaign.

Currently Maryland recognizes gay marriages from other jurisdictions.
