In a press conference Dominican Republic's Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Ramirez goes on a rant in front of the country's media decrying the "decaying of our society" and laying blame squarely on gays and lesbians and foreign organizations that are trying to influence the country even though gay marriage is in fact illegal. During his outburst, the Cardinal, who was joined by the country's first lady, called gay people and those who support gay marriage a derogatory Spanish term for 'fools.' The Cardinal in the past has called gay men 'fags.'Later on the first lady, Margarita Cedeño, met with press outside saying that she supports the words of the Cardinal and that the union of one man and one woman is essential for the fabric of society. She affirmed her opposition to gay marriage stating that marriage is only between a man and woman.
