How Europe duped us

Europe is in a mess right now. The banking crisis that has plagued the continent is now beginning to rip to sheds the democratic prosperity it once had and Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Greece are all now sinking ships of un-payable debt. We were promised that the euro will in fact strengthen economic growth and unify the continent. Well today that is not the case. The euro is crashing, and Europe is more divided now than pre World War I. It is fair to say that we have been duped to believe the mischievous lies of the Euro elite who in the end were the ones that ended up benefiting from the austerity that is being imposed on the peoples of Europe.

Another lie is that Europe is more pro-gay than the US or any other country. Time after time I have been lectured with a giant finger by those from the other side of the pond that my country is nothing but a dumb backwards, red-neck filled hell hole, and that Europe is a "progressive" pro-gay, liberal, utopia that we gay Americans can only dream of.

Of course there are just too many fallacies with that kind of self-righteous lecture. There are a number of states that offer gay marriage, adoption services, benefits, and the like. There are, of course some limitations, which include federal benefits, but the most important ones are given by the state, not the federal government. If I need to these benefits I can simply move to the state that has them. But in Europe, a high court decision that can effect the whole of the continent will make it impossible for any gay European to seek refuge. In the US the Supreme Court is not allowed to rule on other matters that is not before them - meaning that if a case involved gay adoption it cannot also write an opinion on gay marriage. But it looks like that is what happened in Europe as the highest human rights court declared that there is no right to gay marriage in a case in which they ruled that gays have no rights to adopt kids either. This is the same court that has been established to be the "beacon of human rights around the world." What they have done is add fuel to the anti-gay groups that are opposed to gay marriage. Now they can state that in Europe, gay marriage is not human right. With that added kick, anti-gay activists have hopes to once again push back against gay marriage and other gay rights.

And yet, I am supposed to believe that Europe is the example. I think not.
