The day the letter arrived informing them they’d been granted asylum in the United States, Anna and Svetlana — a Russian couple living in Bowling Green — reacted in a typically American way.

Svetlana cried. Anna pulled out her cell phone and videotaped the emotion-packed moment.

“We just needed a decision because it was so hard and depressing to live without [knowing],” said Svetlana, who asked that the couple’s last name not be used for fear of retaliation toward their families back in Russia.
