The US documentary film 'Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine' won the audience award at Russia's main LGBT film festival Bok o bok (Side by Side).
The film was presented by Matthew Shepard's parents Judy and Dennis Shepard, and by the film's director Michele Josue in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Previous LGBT film festivals have been disrupted by local officials and anti-gay activists citing the country's infamous law against "gay propaganda." However there was no disruption during the festival and the organizers took extra measures to ensure the event's success.
Judy and Dennis Shepard are touring Russia to advocate for greater tolerance for the LGBT community.
Swedish movie 'Nånting måste gå sönder' (Something Must Break) won the festival's best feature award.
