The newly confirmed secretary of defense Chuck Hagel vows to build stronger alliances around the world. There was much controversy surrounding his appointment including remarks about Israel, the Iraq war, and derogatory anti-gay comments. Hagel has promised to ensure that gay military families get fair and equal treatment and is now supportive of open service.
