Pope Benedict XVI, carrying a tall, lit candle, ushered in Christianity's most joyous celebration with an Easter vigil service Saturday night, but voiced fears that mankind is groping in darkness, unable to distinguish good from evil.Easter for Christians commemorates Christ's triumph over death with his resurrection following his crucifixion.
"Life is stronger than death. Good is stronger than evil. Love is stronger than hate. Truth is stronger than lies," Benedict, wearing white robes in a symbol of new life, told the faithful in a packed St. Peter's Basilica.
Still, Benedict worried in his homily: "The darkness that poses a real threat to mankind, after all, is the fact that he can see and investigate tangible material things, but cannot see where the world is going or whence it comes, where our own life is going, what is good and what is evil."
"The darkness enshrouding God and obscuring values is the real threat to our existence and to the world in general," the pope said.
"If God and moral values, the difference between good and evil, remain in darkness, then all other 'lights,' that put such incredible technical feats within our reach, are not only progress but also dangers that put us and the world at risk," Benedict added.

Mobile IV Bus Introduced in Las Vegas for Hangovers
In a city where partying has gone mobile, from minibuses equipped with stripper poles to Jacuzzi limos, now comes a curbside service to treat those massive hangovers.
According to a new Las Vegas website, HangoverHeaven.com, a fleet of tour buses is already rolling, with stops at major casinos.
If you're down for the count, they'll send someone to your room with an IV, for the introductory price of $150. Within an hour, you'll be good to go.
The website said the designated pickup areas are at the Hard Rock Hotel, Paris, Bellagio and The Cosmopolitan.
The medications and equipment are FDA approved, according to the website.
North Korea threatens 'merciless punishment' as it readies rocket launch
North Korea was this weekend believed to be at the first stage of launching the rocket, expected between April 12 and 16, claiming that it is part of the centenary celebrations for the birth of the state's founder Kim Il Sung.
However, the United States, Japan and South Korea believe that in reality it will be a ballistic missile test in violation of UN resolutions.
It is against such a backdrop of rising regional tensions surrounding the Korean peninsula that David Cameron, the Prime Minister, will arrive in Japan on a two-day visit this week.
His arrival may, by good fortune, coincide with the blooming of the capital's cherry blossoms, but flower appreciation will take a back seat to regional security issues.
British sperm donor ‘fathered 600 children’
A BRITISH scientist may have fathered 600 children after making donations to a fertility programme he ran with his wife.
And one of his biological children has suggested the number may even be as high as ONE THOUSAND.
Bertold Wiesner - who was born in Austria - ran the Barton Clinic in London which helped more than 1,500 women conceive.
Barry Stevens, a film-maker from Canada, was concieved using Wiesner's donated sperm and said the number could be much higher.
He said last night: "He was the one that found the donors so it's possible he didn't tell his wife and she believed the donations were coming from a lot of different men."
Wiesner ran the controversial clinic with his wife Mary - until he died in 1972. Research shows he regularly made donations from the early 1940s until the mid-1960s.
GOP Superdelegates: It’s Over, Romney Is Nominee
That's the growing consensus among Republican National Committee members who will automatically attend the party's national convention this summer and can support any candidate they choose.
Even some members who support other candidates begrudgingly say the math doesn't add up for anyone but the former Massachusetts governor.
"I would be surprised if Romney doesn't get the number he needs," said Jeff Johnson of Minnesota, who supports former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
Bob Bennett of Ohio was more blunt.
"Look, Gov. Romney's going to be the nominee, and he's going to have enough votes," said Bennett, who is publicly neutral but said he supported Romney four years ago.
Romney's chief rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, is pledging to stay in the race, hoping a victory in his home state's primary April 24 will give his campaign new life. But Santorum has fallen far behind Romney in the race for convention delegates, and RNC members are taking notice, even though most are publicly staying neutral, preferring to let primary voters decide the nominee.
CT Hiker finds beheaded ducks, rooster, used condoms
State environmental police are investigating the dumping of decapitated fowl alongside a trail at Pachaug State Forest this week.
Donna Fenter, of Griswold, said she came upon the pile of 11 decapitated ducks and one rooster Thursday while hiking the blue trail near the Pachaug boat launch between Pachaug State Forest and Hopeville Pond State Park. On top of the animals were used condoms and torn condom wrappers, she said.
“It was gruesome,” she said. “Who would ever think of something like that?”
Since she encountered the grisly scene, she said neighbors and friends have come up with their own theories.
“One suggested it could be some sort of ritual,” she said. “But I don’t know. I can’t even think like that.”
