GOP candidate for US Senate, Heather Wilson, Wants Bullying, Harassment of LGBT Students Legalized

Recently the GOP candidate for the US Senate from New Mexico, Heather Wilson, has attacked Sen. Al Franken's proposal that will punish school districts who do not toughen up against bullying and harassment of LGBT students in school. She has stated that she is opposed to such measure because it:

"...would criminalize harassment or bullying in schools of children who are gay or who -- it criminalizes bullying."

Her take on this issue is rather odd. If she opposes this measure because it "criminalizes" bullying, then what she is implying in effect is that anti-gay bullying should be allowed and legal. She also continues to say that harassing and even threatening gay students is a constitutional right:

"..it would actually punish children and say that it's prohibited to express an opinion with respect to homosexuality in the schools. I just think that's wrong and it's a violation of the First Amendment."

Studies have shown that anti-gay bullying and harassment are detrimental to a healthy learning environment. In many cases bullying and harassment has lead to increase suicides among LGBT youth and students.

Recently a young gay student in Iowa committed suicide after being barraged with harassing messages and threats against his life because of his sexual orientation. Under the logic of Mrs. Wilson this type of behavior against gay students should be legalized and a constitutional right.

We have tried to contact the campaign for a response and so far they have refused to comment at this time.
