Northern Michigan Tribe To Consider Legalizing Gay Marriage

The Odawa Tribe located in Northern Michigan is considering an amendment to their marriage law being proposed by a member of the Tribal Council. To pass five out of four members of the council need to approve the move.

Indian tribes are not subjected to the US Constitution and hence are not constitutionally required to treat same-sex couples equally as each tribe is under its own set of rules and laws. If this measure passes Odawa will be the third tribe in the nation to allow for same-sex marriages.
