The following statement was made by Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director of GOPROUD, a conservative LGBT group.
(Washington, D.C.) – On the two year anniversary of the signing of the controversial Obamacare healthcare reform legislation, Jimmy LaSalvia, Executive Director of GOProud – an organization of gay and straight Americans seeking to promote freedom by supporting free markets, limited government, and a respect for individual rights – released the following statement:
“Two years after the signing of Obamacare, this President’s signature piece of legislation is more unpopular than ever – and with good reason. Obamacare relies on an unconstitutional individual mandate, vastly expands the federal government’s power to control our healthcare system, and does absolutely nothing to improve the quality or affordability of care in this country. For gay and lesbian Americans, Obamacare has been particularly disastrous, expanding discriminatory run government healthcare and failing to expand access to domestic partner benefits.
“Obamacare should be repealed and replaced with free market healthcare reforms that will move us from an employer-based system of healthcare to one where health insurance is owned and controlled by individuals. Instead of waiting for your employer or the federal government to decide to offer domestic partner benefits, gays and lesbians should be able to use advanceable and refundable tax credits to purchase healthcare coverage that provides for domestic partners. By taking control of healthcare out of the hands of employers and putting it into the hands of individuals, gay and lesbian Americans are empowered to purchase insurance tailored to their family’s needs.
“We need reforms such as allowing for purchase of health insurance across state lines – this simple common-sense reform would increase competition, lower costs across the system and expand access to domestic partner benefits.
“We look forward to working with our conservative and libertarian allies to make sure that there is not a third anniversary for this disastrous piece of legislation.”
