Is the religious right becoming dangerous?

Jose in his latest post revealed really interesting information about the psychological reasons for many of these so-called "pro-family" activists involvement in inhibiting our rights and expression. I want to look at it through a different scope though. The Christian/Judeo religious right is trying to cling on to a political structure in order to retain and protect their power.

My theory basically follows along Jose's take on this. These anti-gay bigots are not just perverted in sexual exploitation of their flocks but also they are part of this movement for the urge of maintaining power. One of the most famous lines that come to mind right now is this one: 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely.' What they are after is not 'protecting the family' but getting schmucks who would believe their lies to give them money, to give them an infrastructure, an army, and eventually power.

But is this really at all Christian? I am a Christian myself and by all means, this is not part of our teachings. Jesus Christ hated those who were power hungry and kicked out the money changers from God's temple because these charlatans would in fact exploit the fearful followers to hate each other. And that's what is going on today. If Jesus were to follow what Falwell, Fischer, LaBarbera, and Dobson have done he might as well been part of the ruling Jewish priesthood and regurgitate the same dribble they were teaching during his time. But Jesus was more enlightened and more compassionate for the human race that he did not cave into power like these weasels we call Evangelicals today. Jesus was in fact in complete opposition to the ruling powerful political/religious class that it ended up costing him his life for standing up to these creeps.

What today's Christian Right has become is nothing more and nothing less than a repeat of the charlatans of Jesus' days. They are clinging and fighting for power and at the same time avoiding the pressing issues we face today. Christian author James Davison Hunter says it better:

"Whenever Christian churches and organizations partake in the will to power, they partake in the very thing they decry in society."

When we see these supposed Christians kissing up to evil and corrupt politicians like Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, homophobes and pedophile enablers like Santorum, one can only hope and pray that one day these misguided people see the dangers of seeking power. It can corrupt the soul, the individual and his/her society. They become distant, oppressive, and arrogant. They take out arms and kill innocent people in other countries and steal our wealth. The godless have indeed taken over God's temple.
