What to do with Facebook anti-gay teacher: Suspend her

By Kathleen O'Brien

In my perfect world, no school would've ever hired Viki Knox because of her sheer cluelessness.

The Union County educator isn't the first teacher whose Facebook page landed her in hot water. It seems every few months or so, a teacher spouts off on a not-so-private Facebook page, only to have those words come back to bite.

But that's the whole point. This isn't 2005. Where has she been, and what has she been doing?

Does she not read the paper? Watch TV? Even read the little blurbs on Yahoo.com? Pay any attention whatsoever to current events that affect her profession? The New Jersey School Boards Association came up with a model social media policy two years ago. Earlier this year, Gov. Christie signed a new anti-bullying law.

Oblivious to all this, Knox continued to put a lot of energy into her anti-gay Facebook posts. She doesn't simply disapprove of homosexuality. She REALLY DISAPPROVES!!!!! of homosexuality. Her pinkies must be quite strong after holding down the CAPS key so much.

Her pastor assures us it's sin she hates, not people, but her posts send the vibe that she's kind of enjoying the hating part.

The fact that she lacked the judgment and sheer workplace savvy to refrain from voicing these opinions so broadly — and loudly — makes it hard to see her side of things.
